How to calibrate an Outside Micrometer?

Outside Micrometer is one of the most popular measuring tools which is highly recommended by many professionals in the world. This measuring tool has many applications in a variety of industries and plays an essential role in manufacturing products. Therefore, it needs to be accurate and reliable to ensure the manufacturing process will not be affected by any mistakes. Calibrating outside micrometers frequently is necessary for both individuals using this tool and businesses to maintain the exact in any steps of manufacturing. Today, let’s discover how to calibrate an outside micrometer in this blog!

How to calibrate an Outside Micrometer

What is an Outside Micrometer?

An Outside Micrometer, also called Screw Thread, is a precision measuring instrument, it is usually used for measuring the thickness or outside diameter of small parts, such as measuring some details of rectangular, cylindrical, or tube-shaped objects. It is an industry-standard measuring tool because of its high accuracy/resolution ease of use and should be used by professionals. Outside Micrometer provides plenty of benefits for its user because of the accuracy.

Mechanical (Analogue) outside Micrometer and Digital outside Micrometer The outside micrometer is the most commonly used type of micrometer. An outside micrometer consists of a frame, a spindle, an anvil, a thimble, a barrel, and a sleeve.

Working Principle of Micrometer

The operating principle of a micrometer is based on the principle of contact measurement. The object to be measured is placed between the anvil and the spindle. When the thimble is turned, the spindle is moved axially along the barrel, which in turn applies pressure to the object.

The amount of pressure applied is determined by the number of divisions on the thimble and barrel. The object is then measured by the amount of pressure applied. The accuracy of the measurement is affected by the condition of the anvil and spindle as well as the number of divisions on the thimble and barrel.

Application of Outside Micrometer

Outside Micrometer has many applications in many industries, including:

Mechanical industry: It helps measure precise linear distances, such as the diameter, width, and length of an object. It is commonly used in mechanical engineering and machinist workshops to measure the external dimensions of an object such as a cylinder, screw thread, or block.

Quality control: Quality control specialists depend on micrometers to provide accurate measurements during daily operations. The accuracy of a micrometer helps professionals identify the quality of a product.

Research and Development: In the R&D process, the Outside Micrometer takes responsibility for measuring objects to create new products. Moreover, it makes sure the design of the product will be exactly by millimeters

Additionally, this measuring instrument also contributes to many other industries and help business create productivity, safety, and reliability. Due to its importance, the topic of calibrating the outside micrometer has become a hot problem that both individuals and businesses must care about.

A setting bar and adjusting spanner will be needed to calibrate the micrometer.

The micrometer sleeve has a zero index line and scale, and a scale around the thimble.

To calibrate, get both the index zero and thimble zero to align.

Insert the setting bar between the measuring faces. Gently turn the thimble until you feel the ratchet click.

Locate the spanner with the hole in the back of the sleeve, and gently turn the sleeve until the sleeve index and thimble zero are aligned.

The Micrometer is now calibrated.
