Calibration discipline

What is Mass calibration?

Quick answer

Mass calibration covers balances (analytical, precision, platform) and reference weights (classes E2, F1, F2, M1 per OIML R111). Techmaster’s ISO/IEC 17025:2017 lab is traceable to the SI kilogram (kg).

Balances and weights underpin quality control in pharma, food, chemicals and manufacturing. Mass errors directly affect dosing, formulation and cost — so periodic calibration is a requirement under GMP, ISO 9001 and ISO/IEC 17025.

Techmaster calibrates balances with ISO/IEC 17025 methods (repeatability, linearity, eccentricity, error) and weights per OIML R111, using reference weight sets traceable to the international kilogram.

Measurement range

Typical measurement ranges & CMC

The table below lists typical parameters & measurement ranges for this discipline.

Parameter / Instrument Typical measurement range CMC / Measurement uncertainty
Reference weights 1 mg – 20 kg [Verify against scope]
Analytical balance ≤ 220 g [Verify against scope]
Precision balance ≤ 30 kg [Verify against scope]
Platform scale ≤ 300 kg [Verify against scope]
Floor scale ≤ 3000 kg [Verify against scope]

Note: The ranges & CMC below are typical reference values. Please verify against Techmaster’s official Scope of Accreditation before publishing — actual CMC depends on the reference standard, method and measurement conditions.

Standards & traceability

Reference standards & traceability

Mass measurements are traceable to the SI kilogram (kg) through E2/F1 reference weight sets, following OIML R111 and the EURAMET cg-18 guide for non-automatic weighing instruments.

Q & A

Frequently asked questions

What tests are included in balance calibration? +
Typically: indication error at several loads, repeatability, linearity and eccentricity. Results include the measurement uncertainty on an ISO/IEC 17025 certificate.
What class are my weights and can Techmaster calibrate them? +
Techmaster calibrates weights across classes (E2, F1, F2, M1) per OIML R111. If you are unsure of the class, our engineers will advise based on your use case.
Should scales be calibrated on-site? +
Large scales (floor, weighbridge) are usually best calibrated on-site as they are hard to move. Small lab balances can be brought to the lab for tighter environmental control.
What is the recalibration interval for scales? +
Commonly 6–12 months depending on usage and GMP/ISO requirements. Scales used in testing or trade often need shorter intervals.
