Calibration discipline

What is Force & Hardness calibration?

Quick answer

Force, torque & hardness calibration determines the error of force devices (UTMs, force gauges, load cells), torque tools (torque wrenches, torque meters) and material hardness testers (Rockwell, Brinell, Vickers). Techmaster’s lab is ISO/IEC 17025:2017 accredited.

In mechanical, automotive, steel-structure and manufacturing work, force, tightening torque and hardness results determine product safety and durability. Out-of-tolerance equipment can cause loose/overloaded joints or wrong material assessments — major quality and safety risks.

Techmaster calibrates per reference standards such as ISO 376 (load cells), ISO 6789 (torque wrenches) and ISO 6508/6506/6507 (HR/HB/HV hardness), with traceability to the newton (N) and the SI.

Measurement range

Typical measurement ranges & CMC

The table below lists typical parameters & measurement ranges for this discipline.

Parameter / Instrument Typical measurement range CMC / Measurement uncertainty
Force ≤ 100 kN (up to 1000 kN) [Verify against scope]
Torque ≤ 1000 N·m [Verify against scope]
Torque wrench 1 – 1000 N·m [Verify against scope]
Rockwell 20 – 70 HRC [Verify against scope]
Vickers HV scales [Verify against scope]

Note: The ranges & CMC below are typical reference values. Please verify against Techmaster’s official Scope of Accreditation before publishing — actual CMC depends on the reference standard, method and measurement conditions.

Standards & traceability

Reference standards & traceability

Force is traceable to the SI newton (N); hardness is traceable via certified reference hardness blocks. Reference standards: ISO 376, ISO 6789, ISO 6508/6506/6507.

Q & A

Frequently asked questions

Which torque wrenches can Techmaster calibrate? +
Click-type, dial and electronic torque wrenches, plus torque screwdrivers, per ISO 6789. Results include error and measurement uncertainty.
Does hardness tester calibration use reference blocks? +
Yes. Techmaster uses certified, traceable hardness reference blocks to perform indirect verification of hardness testers on the relevant scale (HR/HB/HV).
Can UTMs be calibrated at our plant? +
Yes. Large UTMs are usually calibrated on-site with reference load cells/proving rings per ISO 7500-1, avoiding teardown and transport.
What interval suits torque wrenches? +
Usually 12 months or by number of cycles (e.g. every 5,000 operations), depending on the maker’s guidance and IATF 16949 requirements.
